Refinishing The Rudder
These photos show how I refinished the rudder.

The rudder after some sanding, but with most of the original finish intact. When I wiped it down with thinners, the old paint started dissolving, so a belt sander was used to remove it.

The rudder sanded back to the bare wood.

The rudder was then given two coats of primer.

When the primer had dried, the rudder was clamped in a workmate so that the top half could be painted with four coats of red polyuerathane.

Red.

After leaving the final coat of red to cure for a couple of days, the rudder was inverted and the water line masked off before applying the blue antifoul.
